Lions Running Back Predicts Playoffs

Though we’re not quite sure precisely what he said or precisely when or where he said it, the folks who operate the official (presumably) Mlive.com Twitter feed have posted that Lions running back Kevin Smith is predicting that the team will make it to the playoffs.

[UPDATE: Our pal Gregg Rosenthal points out that Smith makes the assertion on his blog: “I won’t make a prediction about how many games we’re going to win, but I will say this: We will definitely make the playoffs this season.”]

Um, does he mean by purchasing 53 tickets?

Look, we like confidence. And we learned last year from teams like the Dolphins, Falcons, and Ravens that a new coach can dramatically reverse a bad season.

But, when it comes to confidence, we think of Vikram’s observation when discussing the man who was his boss for an hour or two at the Michael Scott Paper Company, “Confidence. It’s the food of the wise man, but the liquor of the fool.”

Given the franchise’s recent history, no one should be saying anything about what the team could or might do. Prior to the 2007 season, former quarterback Jon Kitna gushed about the possibility of ten wins. And, with three wins in 2009, they’ll finally get there.

So, please. We beg this of anyone employed by the Lions. Shut up and focus on your business. The last thing that Smith or any other player should be talking about on the heels of an 0-16 season is playoffs.

Maybe, in hindsight, they should have hired Jim Mora.
