Favre sends in reinstatement
The unofficial unretirement of Brett Favre has moved closer to becoming official.
Favre faxed his request for reinstatement to the league office on Tuesday, following through on statements made during the offseason that he wanted to end his brief retirement.
League spokesman Randall Liu confirmed through The Associated Press that the NFL had received the request, which was earlier reported by NFL Network's Adam Schefter.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will not act on Favre's request on Tuesday, according to Schefter.
"It's obviously the first step in Brett coming back, but we'll deal with that once he is reinstated," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "We'll definitely have a plan in order. ... We'll address everything, as far as the details about how Brett Favre fits into our future plans, when he arrives here in Green Bay."
Once his reinstatement is approved by the league, which is expected to be a formality, the Packers have 24 hours to either release Favre or bring him back on the active roster. Packers general manager Ted Thompson has said the Packers have no plans to release Favre.
The Packers own Favre's rights until his contract expires after the 2010 season.
Favre had expressed his desire to report to Packers' training camp last week. Thompson said Monday he spoke with Favre on two occasions over the weekend, and the two mutually agreed Favre would delay reporting to camp.
Once reinstated, Favre can report to the Packers. Whether he does so remains to be seen. If and when Favre does report, he will rejoin the Packers without a defined role. Packers head coach Mike McCarthy reiterated during his season-opening press conference that the team is committed to fourth-year quarterback Aaron Rodgers as its starter.
"They've said I'm the starter," Rodgers said after hearing the news of Favre's pending reinstatement. "Until that changes, that's going to be my focus."
McCarthy said Rodgers will start all of the preseason games and probably get more playing time than Favre used to in the preseason.
"He'll be starting all of the games as the starter," McCarthy said of Rodgers. "We've talked about possibly playing our first group maybe a little longer, and those are things that we'll discuss. The health of your football team obviously factors into that, so that is our plan going into the preseason with Aaron."
McCarthy first learned that Favre had filed for reinstatement when he stepped off the field following practice to meet with the media. He remained tightlipped about Favre potentially reporting to rejoin the team or what his role might be, expressing his desire to speak with Favre first before making any news public. But he did allude that the Packers have discussed a future plan if Favre was to be reinstated.
McCarthy, who said Favre would be welcomed back to the locker room, has spoken to the team about the ongoing situation and conceded it could be considered a distraction.
"I'm not going to sit here and tell you it's not a distraction," said McCarthy. "But it's only a distraction if we let it be a distraction. It's an external problem, that's really the way we view it. Now we have to deal with it, we have a responsibility to the media and we're here dealing with that."
