Scouting Report, Waukesha North

Defensive Style: Diamond Back, Man Marking

The Northstars look as they usually do, overwhelmed and under talented. To their and their head coach's (newly hired Seth Dehne) credit they appeared to get much stronger as the game went on, despite not being reflected in the final score.

North plays a basic diamond defense where their strongest defender is without question Brandon Banaszynski (#23). The full backs on each side are Andrew Garcia (#16) and either Peter Brenny (#7) or Luke Viall (#20), with Travis Kelven (#4) playing stopper back. The full backs are clearly the weak links to the back four. Although Viall and Garcia are solid tacklers, neither is consistent on the most basic of passes. Brenny was benched half way through the first half for repeated turnovers and missed tackles.

The Central midfielders for the North Stars are the strongest unit. Paul Dynis (#10) and Ryan Szecsy (#11) make up the tandem with no substitutes worth noting. Dynis was a pleasant surprise, he seems to be working hard and has gained some confidence since the 2007 season. While Szecsy is playing out of position he is getting much more involved with the plays.

North looks to be platooning the outside midfielders and forwards with decent players but players you will not game plan against.

Offensive Positives

Being their first game of the season it took North 25 minutes to finally put together an offensive sequence. Paul Dynis led the charge using Szecsy as a wall passer. The sequence did not last long, without any goals being scored but it was the first time in the game that anyone looked in sync with anyone else.

As the game progressed there was an enormous swing in possession. North dominated possession after the 25th minute. Rarely did it produce anything truly dangerous but it is a good sign that North has something to build off of.

Paul Dynis may be a player to watch closely. If he gets any help from his wings and/or forwards he will be able to produce some nice attacks.

Evan Larson (#18) and James Rosenwald (#2) could develop into decent outside midfielders. They both run through tackles and are willing to work for a second ball, although neither has much in the way of offensive prowess to punish a team’s mistakes.

North finished the game with possession in their favor at a ratio of 55:45.

Offensive Negatives

North’s only real possibilities for goals were on broken plays from New Berlin’s weak defenders. They also benefited greatly from their opponents inability to play a proper flat four defense.

The central midfielders never check on the weak side of the field. When they attack a particular side they will continue to attack that side until the ball is stolen or a cross from deep in the corner is made. Originality in their attack is non-existent.

Defensive Positives

North pushes quickly out of the 18 on clears.

Banaszynski made a great run forward making one of the team’s only true scoring opportunities. The problem arose when New Berlin stole the ball scoring their second goal in the same sequence.

Defensive Negatives

Ball control is nonexistent. It is to the point where clearing the ball is much more advantageous than playing a short ball to one of the outside backs that will assuredly be stolen within seconds.

While being attacked their spacing is terrible, the yards between the four backs fluctuates with seemingly no reason. At no point do you hear the defenders trying to remedy the problem; they may not even know that it exists.

Despite Banaszynski’s many qualities he will ball watch with regularity. Against a team like New Berlin West he was able to make up for any mistakes with his speed. This will not be the case once conference play starts.

On the second goal Banaszynski was forward completing a quality run; Andrew Garcia did the right thing filling his position. The goal was scored because the only true defender in the back was gone and no one was willing to fill the role.

I assume North has seen the last of Peter Brenny as a defender. He certainly lost the ball enough times over the 20 minutes he played to warrant a new position on or off the playing field, more than likely, the latter.
