Cutler going to BearsComment Email Print Share By John Clayton

The Chicago Bears pulled the big upset Thursday afternoon by acquiring Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, a source told ESPN.com.
The Broncos confirmed the move.

To acquire Cutler, the Bears had to give up quarterback Kyle Orton and first-round picks in 2009 and 2010, a source said.
To complete the trade, the Broncos had to give back a third-round pick in 2009.
The Bears beat out the Redskins, Buccaneers, Lions, Titans and other teams to get land the 25-year-old Pro Bowl quarterback.
The Broncos had been asking for at least two first-round choices.

Cutler asked to be traded when he found out first-year coach Josh McDaniels tried to acquire Matt Cassel in a trade with the Patriots.
Cutler had not returned phone calls from the Broncos, according to the team, and had been staying away from the offseason program.

**** that deal, two first round picks? why is he worth it... his 17-20 record? Yeah he made a pro bowl..
I just don't see him being worth this much. I'm glad the bears made this trade just because this is going to have long term effects on their organization! YAY FOR BEARS WHO SUCK!!!

Re: Cutler to Bears
I think Cutler is overrated. I'm so happy this happened because I was worried the Lions were going to try and deal to get him. Good luck to the Bears, they will need it. Denver came out on top in this.

Re: Cutler to Bears
I don't think either team is a clear winner. At this point in time, Cutler is a clear upgrade on Orton. Orton isn't a bad QB, and might still become a good enough starter for Denver or some other team, but when you look at Chicago's extreme difficulty finding a QB in the last 20 years you understand why they might feel the need to deal for someone that is young and talented.
The problem with trades that involve draft picks (or the fun of them, depending on how you see it) is that they will be judged entirely in hindsight. If Denver's first round picks this year and next turn out to be flops, which is a possibility, then everyone will say the Bears made an awesome trade. If the Broncos get a good player or two out of those picks, then the Bears will be called idiots...but only by those privileged enough to know how the picks turned out.

Until Cutler starts playing middle linebacker, i'm not sure how you can blame him for their record?cpschult wrote:**** that deal, two first round picks? why is he worth it... his 17-20 record? Yeah he made a pro bowl..

Denver Defense:
Points 28.0 (30th)
Yards 374.6 (29th)
Pass Yards (26th)
Rush Yards (27th)
Denver Offense:
Points 23.1 (16th)
Yards 395.8 (2nd)
Pass Yards 279.4 (3rd)
Rush 116.4 (12th)
I'm not sure how you can blame cutler for his defense giving up 30, 30, and 52 points to finish the 08 season...Anyway, I think he is the best QB in the NFL under the age of 27. Even if he doesn't become a super star in Chicago, I still think he is worth the picks.
Look at the draft class he came out of. Of the top 5 QB's, (in order of drafting) V Young (benched), Leinart (benched), Cutler (pro bowl), Clemens (benched/replaced), Croyle (benched/replaced). Even if the Bears kept their two first rounders and drafted a QB each time, the chances of landing the one QB that makes it in any given year is a reach.
Clearly some years are better than others, see Matt Ryan, but for the most part, it seems that 1 our of 3 first round QB's are even under center come year three. It's a tough position to draft and I think the Bears AND the broncos made out great on this.

Re: Cutler to Bears
If you like stats so much, maybe you'll like this.
18 picks last season (more than one a game for the late person) and a QB rating of 86. Granted, he had a lot of TD's and yards but I am not sure that a lot of TD's and yards warrants 2 first round picks.
That's not even mentioning his cry-baby attitude.

We'll see soon enough. I still think it was a great trade for both teams. Despite Cutler acting like a little sissy boy, he'll see some solid success in Chicago.

the only trade scenarios I see happening here are these; to the browns for quinn and picks, or to the lions for the #1 pick
it's a pipe dream to think he'll be traded for the #17 pick alone
the broncos have to get a QB in return, or the ability to draft any QB in the draft
it's a weak QB crop this year, so the browns rumored deal is the most likely
remember jets fans, he is looking for a bigger deal, and we'd have to give up the #17 AND more for him
17-20 as a starter, 42 turnovers in 37 games

Manning, by the way, started out 3-13 with an NFL-leading 28 interceptions in his first 16 games. The Colts were fools to not cut bait at that time. Fools, I tell you.
Troy Aikman's first 3 seasons (38 games):
31 TD's
46 interceptions (that's 9 more than Cutler despite attempting 165 fewer passes)
14-24 record
Clearly, Dallas should have gone with Steve Walsh.
Steve Young's first couple of seasons with Tampa Bay (19 games):
11 TD's
21 INT"s
3-16 record
The Bucs were right to get rid of him. Vinny was simply the awesomist after they traded Young away.
If Cutler is available to us (which he probably isn't), we go get him. Our next two firsts and any QB's they want from our roster - I would do that in my sleep.
I simply do not understand your disdain for this player. We don't even have to go through those first 2-3 years' growing pains with a new NFL QB. Denver already took care of that. He's not the best QB in the NFL. But he's plenty good & is a sure thing who is likely only going to get better. Right now we have two enormous question-marks and people want to draft another one even rawer the two we have.
Frankly, we should have taken him when we had the chance. Now that we (potentially) get a 2nd chance on an error in drafting judgment people are advocating keeping Kellen Clemens, Brett Ratliff, Erik Ainge and/or drafting Mark Sanchez who (with some luck) is 3 years away from being a solid NFL starter?
Young, NFL-ready franchise QB's don't grow on trees. Suddenly, one actually is. And people are still saying, "Meh. No thanks."

Statistics are a tricky little beetch. You can prove any case with them. I'll say it again, he won't amount to much in Chicago.

Re: Cutler to Bears
Hm, after reading this I'm glad that Chicago's offense is terrible!
****, I forgot, didn't they have an awesome rookie running back?
At least their wideouts suck?

Re: Cutler to Bears
Once again, Booba makes a good point. Stats can be manipulated to support almost any claim. And, like schult, I must admit that I am a little scared about what Cutler might be able to do with Forte to take off some pressure. He certainly didn't have a consistent run game in Denver. If Chicago can upgrade the WRs and pick up some OL help, the Bears might pass the Vikings as my most feared NFC North opposition.

You can manipulate them but you can't make them up out of thin air. I think he was fortunate to have a good receiver in Marshall, but lets not forget, he was a 4th round pick. His second favorite target (debateably) is a 2nd round TE with a specialty in blocking (not that he can't catch, i think he's pretty solid).
So my question is, what makes Cutler? Are his receivers just overachievers or is a lot of it him?
I'd say both but you get what i'm saying. He might make a below average Chicago receiving corps pretty solid.
As for the offensive line, they drafted Chris Williams at number 14 last year and just signed Orlando Pace this year. Their tackles should be pretty solid and if i remember right, their guards are pretty average with a good center. I'm not much for bandwagoning but I think the bears will be an 11 win team next year.

You didn't take the Bears's luck into account. Five wins at most.
