Re: ***Carroll Girls Vs Illinois Wesleyan***
I am having major problems with the internet right now. I will post once the connection comes back.
IW opens the game in a four flat defense. They don’t seem to have a lot of speed on their line but their keeper plays a high line and has picked off two through balls so far. Callender has had a little trouble getting into a rhythm because IW is collapsing on her on every touch.
Two shots thus far for IW, neither have been big threats.
Shield by callender, she got into the open but was cut down quickly by the left center back. Not much room to breathe in the IW defense.
Carroll’s defense is a little slow on the ball and have been ripped three times (20th minute).
Callender has the ball in the right corner, quick pass/shot to Utech. Utech takes to the endline where she cuts back hard for a cross. Blocked.

Counter attack. IW comes down the right sideline, Carroll is slow to recover, Foreman gets beat and surrenders the corner. Corner taken, cleared by Reinke with a fist. Ball squirts to the 18, shot…fired high, very close.
Game started in CU’s advantage but has since shifted. CU is not getting possession in their attacking third. Any possession they win is very central and played very direct at their forwards.

Near steal by Callender. IW’s back four is confident on the ball and do not shy away from passing in their defensive third, despite the forward’s pressure.
CU was bailed out on a call against the left fullback. CU does not have an answer for the IW forwards; both are fast and reasonably crafty. The midfield is present but slow to help out, it may be cause for concern as the game wears on.

Blenner to Uttech. Uttech has space, takes on her defender. Beats the first but could not catch up to the ball and was harmlessly cleared. IW’s back four has excellent spacing. 1 v1’s may not exist.
Amanda Leach enters the match at outside mid.

Blenner is on her game. I count three through balls that were very playable for her forwards. She’s the one player that has had time on the ball and is fully utilizing it.
IW counters. Two forwards take on three CU defenders. #15 draws both fullback and sweeper, leaves it for the forward near Foreman. Foreman is there but surrenders a shot. Easy save for Reinke.

Re: ***Carroll Girls Vs Illinois Wesleyan***
Great rotation onto the extra attacker brought on by IW’s outside defender. Foreman calls her midfield up to the ball, while Foreman rotates to the outside midfield, earning a steal and a quick outlet.
There is a huge gap between the CU forwards and defenders. IW has no problem stepping in that area scooping up countless clears and deflections. Any chance for team counter attacks is thwarted by their separation.
BTW, I apologize for not having an IW roster. The internet is giving me problems and I can’t get their page pulled up.

Reinke with another fist save on a corner. She is narrowly winning these balls and IW is not doing a great job of challenging. The IW attack is so much more effective when the ball is at their feet; not on set plays.
IW plays the corner short. Two players take it out, worked a cross but it was blocked easily. IW collects, again, large gap between CU midfielders and forwards.
Short corner again. This time Carroll did not challenge the short pass, IW shot on an open goal. Saved by Reinke.
IW has some stud attackers. CU has stopped them so far but it has been more than a few times where the CU defender is on an island. If it continues, CU will lose one of these battles for an easy tap in. They need to gain a possession before everyone tires out. 37th minute.
40 yard played across CU’s box. Reinke comes out for the catch while flattening an IW forward. Great play, very dangerous set up.
CU foul. 30 yards out, left side of the field. IW’s #10 on the ball, two man wall. Great ball, played to the top of the six, IW wins and flicks high of the goal.
One minute left. IW holds a long possession, working the ball from right to left. 19 sizes up a shot putting it high on the goal; Reinke gets her right hand on it, tipping it up to herself for the finger tip save. IW’s possession are becoming more and more dangerous as time goes on. CU needs to gain some kind of an attack aside from counters.

IW is pushing an extra player forward. Looks like a three forward set but it may be two outside mids joining the attack.
Uttech gets slotted through. Offside.

Re: ***Carroll Girls Vs Illinois Wesleyan***
Shot fired by 20; great power going away from the goal. CU is very fortunate she missed high. CU needs more pressure on all defenders, they cannot surrender even long range shots at this point; despite Reinke’s great play in the back.
Another attack on the outside right. Foreman is drawn to far wide, inside midfielder takes it at speed drawing the CU sweeper. At the last moment slots a pass back to the outside midfielder about 7 yards from goal…Reinke picks off the pass.
Blenner sizes up the back line for a split to Uttech but is blocked at the last. CU is earning more attacks this half but are also giving up as many as the previous.
Torquino with a missed touch. Ball was played fast enough to clear the defense for an IW throw in.
CU still playing very direct. Blenner is playing great but she isn’t getting small touches up the sideline. All attacks are played directly to Uttech and Carpenter’s feet. There’s no denying their talent but CU needs to find other ways of getting them involved.
IW counter! Coming down the left sideline, CU swarms to the ball. The ball is then switched to a WIDE open #16, she has all day to size up a shot, firing it just wide of the goal. Reinke may have had it covered if it were inside of the post but Carroll’s luck has to be in short supply.
Crosse by IW. Headed to the goal, Reinke takes it off the cross bar putting it back in play. Foreman and Tarquino swarm for the clear.
I didn’t catch who but there was an obvious hand ball in the CU box. All CU players acted like nothing happened but it could have easily been a PK. Very fortunate. IW corner…Reinke clear. Shot from deep in the corner of the 18, over the cross bar...Reinke had it covered.
Foreman had a brutal save against a streaking forward. Both coming at full speed, Foreman at a 90 degree gets a foot on the ball at the same time as 15. There was a foul called but seemed unnecessary.
Foreman plays a 50 yard ball that is flicked by Blenner. Uttech runs past her defender reaching a toe out for a toe-shot. Shot was saved with relative ease. It was the first CU attack in over 15 minutes that ended in the keeper’s hands.

Re: ***Carroll Girls Vs Illinois Wesleyan***
14 comes flying down the field into space. Foreman comes over to challenge but is held at by with a body shield. Still at speed she skins Torquino, getting behind all CU defenders. Reinke comes out but does not get on the ground. The keeper’s fingers hit the ball just out of 14’s reach while Foreman pounds her into the ground (appeared to be a foul but ref has been sketchy at best and is unlikely to call a PK). The ball squirts away from Reinke but with 14 still on the ground, she is able to recover, grabbing the ball with 3 CU defenders to support. IW’s 14 may be the best player and athlete on the field.
Spoke too soon. Callender finally gets involved in the left corner. She turns to face her defender, puts on a move to get past but is stuck. CU throw in, ball cleared to IW.
Uttech is back. Down the right sideline, tries to skin two defenders but gets stripped. CU is attacking numbers down every time but thankfully defends numbers up.
Foreman stuffs 18 in the corner on a one on one. All three defenders and Reinke are having a hell of a day.

Re: ***Carroll Girls Vs Illinois Wesleyan***
It is entirely possible that the referee is a CU alumni. Plenty of calls are going in favor of the orange machine.
CU’s third leading scorer, Leach, has not had a touch in the second half.
Uttech plays a long driven ball through to Callender. She had a bead on it but so did the sweeper; beating her to the ball. CU throw.
14 comes at CU again. With two CU defenders on her hip, she realeses to a forward who takes a set up touch for a shot but it quickly cleared by Tarquino. Quickly following that play, CU has another one on one tackle on their end line for yet another IW corner. Cleared away, IW throw.

CU is finally challenging the second balls. Callender does not win her challenge but the ball popped up to Uttech. Uttech takes a couple touches to the IW back line, fires a shot high and wide.
The ball finally finds its way to CU’s right side. Leach gets her first touch to Blenner, which is quickly intercepted, being brought back to IW for a long range shot that was blocked and scooped by Reinke.

Re: ***Carroll Girls Vs Illinois Wesleyan***
Foreman is playing extremely high off her line. Tarquino and the rest of the defenders look to be fine with it but it is a large gamble, in my opinion. In Foreman’s defense, she has won nearly every tackle she has been asked to make, regardless of her position on the pitch.
14 shoots from everywhere. IW has had some great attacks that go inside, outside and back inside, finishing with a shot by #14. She narrowly missed the inside of the post.
The high CU line came back to bite them for a cross. Both outside midfielder and outside defender pushed off their line and were beaten by a nicely placed through ball. It was then played across the goal mouth for a goal kick.

Foreman on another tackle. IW corner. Cleared by Blenner. Callender comes into the midfield to challenge but loses. Ball is back to CU, it’s beyond challenging for them to earn possessions but when they do, they are getting to the IW goal.
ONE ON ONE WITH REINKE. No defender in site, 14 takes on the CU keeper, from 15 yards out, fires to the corner, Reinke dives, batting it just wide of the post. Ensuing corner—Reinke catches the cross. CU will not go away.
Another Reinke save. Shot from 22 plus yards.

Callender brings it down unmolested. Getting all the way to the 30 before passing to Leach. Leach one times over the top to Callender, slowing her down which allowed her defender to gain ground. Ball cleared. Leach runs it down, resumes the attack. Switched to the other side, Uttech gets a chance in space but the keeper is quick off her line for the save.
UTtech again. Turns the corner, dishes to Callender, Callender doesn’t step to the ball, IW steps in front blocking the point blank shot on a nearly open goal.
30 seconds, CU corner. Cross is deflected into the 18, Melcher turns and fires wide; ball still in play, collected and cleared by IW. CU steals, takes it up the sideline as time runs out.

Foul on Foreman. 40 yards out on the right hash markings, ball played in and cleared by CU. IW retains possession, 16 skins Foreman, passes to 14, shot hit wide.
Another Bullet dodged. Foreman could not get to the shot in time; ball was struck from 12 yards out but high. Shot was uncontested and Reinke had no chance to react at such a short distance.
Leach flies up the right sideline, beats a defender, gets to the corner for a cross but neither Callender or Uttech could get there...saved by IW.

Cross from the right side, 15 sits uncontested, driving a shot right at Reinke, with no time to react, Reinke gets both hands on it, not only blocking but catching the backside of the ball as it nearly crossed the goal line.

CU foul--- 32 yards out, dead center. Three man wall, shot driven hard over the wall, striking the cross bar, going straight up into the air but still in play. Reinke is on the ground with the entire IW offense flying in, couple with the CU defense. Ball is right on the goal line, no CU defender can get a foot on the ball while turning for the clear. The ball and about 7 players landed in the unattended goal. 43 seconds left in the overtime period.

Re: ***Carroll Girls Vs Illinois Wesleyan***
I have been meaning to comment on this team since I saw them at Grinnell.
How the hell do these chicks play for Bretzmann? He clearly has a talented team but does not have the slightest clue how to use them.
It looked like to me that the Carroll girls were supremely talented to the Grinnell girls. What I was wondering was; why leave the starters in for the entire second half in a 4-0 game? Trying to puff up stats are we?
No one can fault Carroll for the schedule they play but you could fault them for running up scores (8-1, 9-2, 7-0, 6-0, and 10-0). If those games were anything like the couple games I have seen them play over the years, their starters were more than likely in for the duration of these matches.
So good for Bretzmann, gets coach of the year and loses, again, in the first round of the NCAA's.
Bretzmann couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag with gasoline and a blow torch.
The Carroll girls were really talented this year, especially their forwards, yet they still cannot win in the big games. Not only did they not win, they got out shot 27-5 along the way. Touch loss Carroll, get a new coach and I bet you not only win the first round but you advance to the Sweet 16.

You have been saying what we have been thinking for the last 4 years haha. I wish I could take over the girls program....
Re: ***Carroll Girls Vs Illinois Wesleyan***
I was wondering what the Carroll crowd thought of him. I have only seen them in small doses but I have never been impressed. A few years back the Grinnell girls were really good and I thought the Carroll girls were even better. Grinnell beat them in the regular season and then again in the tournament.
Their coach simply cannot game plan. Has he ever had a big win? I'm not even being sarcastic, I am just curious.

Ollie, Craig said that's what people have been thinking for the last 4 years, I add that I have been thinking it since 2001 so make that 8. He always seems to be able to recruit amazing raw talent, but as you and Craig both noted cannot coach to save his life.
I seem to recall when I was at Carroll the girls had a 'playbook'. One of their plays he had drawn up was dribble the ball to the endline and then drop it back to the 18 yard line - that is pretty impressive coaching skills. In his defense I think the binder the girls had looked nice???

Re: ***Carroll Girls Vs Illinois Wesleyan***
For years at the end of the season the girls get surveys that evaluate the coaches and athletic staff etc. EVERY time they get those, dozen of girls complain about the coaching and nothing has been done. For voting and coach of the year the players should be asked for their input. Like other has have said on this, who cares with the Wins, it's the tough teams they have problems with because of coaching 'tactics.'
He really had no idea what to do and whenever the players come to him with ideas and how to better the program, he shuts them down right away.
He needs to stop playing favorites and stop trying to run the score and have these talented girls play actual teams so next time they play a team like Illinois Wesleyan they can be more prepared...

That was a brutal loss to watch. I thought Wesleyan had a great squad but it really should have been closer...I'm not calling anybody out, just thinking it looked like the two teams had equal talent but Carroll could not get it going. It was disappointing to say the least.

Re: ***Carroll Girls Vs Illinois Wesleyan***
Its knowledge of the game that seperates coaches and he seems to not have any. He runs "drills" in practice where over 3/4s of the team are standing and watching...talk about intense and "practice like its a game." People wonder why talented players come to the program and quit year after year. Of course no school is going to keep every player from freshman to senior year but peoples eyes would blow-up when they see his retention rate. Girls drop off year in and year out. And many girls ON the team cant stand him. Its more or less putting up with him because they love soccer and still want to play.
My advice to girls. Dont just fill the stuff out at the end of the season. Get a group of girls and set up a meeting with the AD. Its hard to replace a coach when he consistently wins conference but actions speak louder than words and the team complaining to the AD in person will speak volumes of what you really think..

Re: ***Carroll Girls Vs Illinois Wesleyan***
Well said Craig
Talented girls come to the program because they see our record or their friends are on the team. If only the recruits really knew how we felt about Jason.
Craid, your exactly right in the reasoning why we stay on the team, because Jason really does test our passion on the love the game... and it's hard to choose. I knew of this year girls driving to Jasons house and teling him he is doing a bad coaching job and there are many players on the team that feel this way... now im not sure how he took it, but still nothing has been done.
He plays favorites that ruin the chemisty on our team and if we did have that coach who knew what he was doing, like everyone said we could've gone further and we could really utilize the talent we have on the team
I would love to get a bunch of girls to go to the AD, but as we all know girls hate confrentation and i bet only a few girls would go with me. It should be the AD's job to see all those surveys and sit down with the team to figure out what is going on.

I love public speaking and would be more than happy doing it under one condition haha. You tell Jacobson to hire me lol. And I will quit after the year if we dont get past the first round. Was tempted to say "sweet 16"

No AD will bring this to you. Jacobsen has more than just women's soccer to look at and I assure you she is not as interested in complaints from a team that just made another NCAA appearance and swept their conference.
I see your side of the dilemma but it is on your (including your team's) shoulders to get something going.

yeah true but i think the AD should actually read the surveys not just throw them to the side just because they keep winning.

Re: ***Carroll Girls Vs Illinois Wesleyan***
haha and if you were coach Craig, you'd make us do fitness which would probably have half the team quit... lol
I dunno i'll think about it, but i wouldn't even know where to start when talking to the AD
