Hietpas Scores Three in Carroll Route
In the first game of the Midwest Conference tournament, Lawrence University took
on the heavily favored Carroll University Pioneers. In the very early goings
Lawrence nearly chased down a ball played back to Carroll’s keeper Stanislaw
Miaskowski. Once Miaskowski corralled the pass back he immediately found Dona
Lado on the right flank to initiate the counter attack.
Lado played a couple of give and goes, utilizing both central midfielders to advance
the ball into the attacking third. Once Lado drew Lawrence’s left center back, he
slotted a beautifully place threw ball to Mark Hietpas. Taking just one touch to set
up a shot, Hietpas fired a shot back post, easily beating the Vikings keeper for the
game’s first goal in the game’s 1st minute.
In the next 14 minutes Carroll proved they were the better team by scoring two
more goals with relative ease. It was at this point that Lawrence seemed to give up
on playing the game and started playing to foul. Foul after foul, Lawrence players
continued to tackle with their spikes up having total disregard for where the ball
was.
With 7 minutes remaining before half time, Carroll had a let down on their back line
allowing the first and only Lawrence goal by reserve forward, Bennett Pang (#6).
With the score at 4-1 in Carroll’s favor, the Pioneers cruised through the second half
dominating in time of possession, shots and corner kicks taken.
With 5 minutes remaining, Carroll substituted their starting forwards giving way to
Jarid Brabender, David Hansen and Jon Rogers. Playing better than they had in the
minutes leading into halftime, Brabender scored in the 88th minute on an assist from
Hansen making the score 6-1.
This was a match that had “trap” written all over it. Having previously defeated
Lawrence 5-0 in the regular season, there was little doubt on who the superior team
was. As it is in every sport, the superior team does not win by merely showing up.
Carroll took advantage of sloppy tackling and midfield play, scoring early and often
which ended up burying Lawrence before they could even reach half time.
Led by junior Mark Hietpas’ 12 shots and 3 goals, the Carroll University Pioneers are
headed to the championship game of the Midwest Conference tournament where
they will face Grinnell College.
Match will be held at Schneider Stadium in Waukesha Wisconsin at noon on
Saturday November 8th.
