Coldplay Accused of Stealing 'Vida' Tune

(June 17) -- In the old days, ripping off of a random, obscure band may have been easy going for bigger acts. Now, in the age of YouTube, not so much.

Coldplay is the latest major band to be accused via YouTube of stealing music, as Brooklyn-based rockers Creaky Boards have posted a side-by-side comparison of their song with Coldplay's hit single and iTunes ditty "Viva la Vida." Ironically, the title of the Creaky Boards song is ... wait for it ... "The Songs I Didn't Write."

While the songs do indeed sound the same, it's tough to confirm whether there's any legitimacy to the Creaky Boards claim, as the song in question was never released on an album. In the video, the band posts what they say is footage of them performing the tune in 2007, even claiming that Coldplay frontman Chris Martin was in the crowd.

"We were flattered when we thought we saw Chris Martin in the crowd that night. He seemed pretty into it. Maybe too into it," a caption on the video reads.

The YouTube "my tiny band's song and your big song side-by-side" defense has been a recurring event lately. Avril Lavigne was the first major act to get the treatment on YouTube, as her hit 'Girlfriend' was supposedly stolen from The Rubinoos' 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.' Since Lavigne, Miley Cyrus and Jessica Simpson both faced the same critiques.

bunch of hacks. No offense to the people who like them but their latest album was almost unlistenable.

As for your expertise in what is good and bad music, we all appreciate your opinion.

I don't know why everyone is so hard on Coldplay. They are not an earth shattering band but who is? They have had two very decent albums but seemed to get ripped for saying things like, wanting a "best of" album or for their lyrics.

I guess the latter is a pretty good argument. Their lyrics tend to be very "15 year old girlish". Look no further than "Green Eyes", it's catchy but bad at the same time.

Carter I'm just curious how much of the new album did you listen to? I know you hate Clocks, but you enjoy A Rush of Blood to the Head for the most part, so I'm just wondering if you gave half the album a listen to and didn't like it, or a couple songs?

I 'listened' to the whole thing. it was on in the car when i drove to la crosse with tom and jessi. I sort of tuned it out after i heard their one radio song, i really don't like that song.

If you cherry picked a few songs i'm sure i'd like them. And you are right about rush of blood, i like that one quite a bit, not all of it, like you said. Then i think Parachutes was a really great album.

Haven't had much faith in them past that.
